Foundation Literacy & Numeracy

The primary education system in Nigeria is tasked with the critical responsibility of developing foundational literacy and numeracy skills in young learners, which serve as the bedrock for future academic success and lifelong learning. The acquisition of these skills is most efficacious in the early grades, when instruction is delivered in the pupil’s mother tongue, leveraging the child’s existing linguistic and cognitive abilities to facilitate a seamless transition to life-long education.Unfortunately, the sub-Saharan region, including Nigeria, is grappling with a severe learning crisis and Nigeria bears the unenviable distinction of having the highest number of out-of-school children globally, with over 10 million children aged 5-14 not attending school, thereby exacerbating the learning crisis.

To address this multifaceted crisis, QEDA’s faculty offers expertise in Functional Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) across various spectrums. By adopting a multifaceted approach to address the learning crisis in Nigeria and the sub-Saharan region, we can improve educational outcomes, reduce disparities, promote inclusive and equitable education, enhance teacher capacity, develop context-appropriate teaching and learning materials, and inform policy and practice with research evidence.
